How do you Shampoo?

Do you know how to shampoo your hair? I mean, do you really know?
I often hear from guests that they love the way their hair feels after they leave the salon. Part of that is my good old TLC. But the other part is that I’m properly cleansing your hair as part of the service. Think of me like a dentist. You brush your teeth every day, but still need that deep clean from the dentist every six months. I do the same with your hair. Often, I use a clarifying shampoo to release extra build-up. I usually shampoo at least twice, and scrub every part of the scalp. Even if you don’t do much with your hair in-between appointments, you have build-up from hard-water (thanks Colorado), air pollution, allergens, and sweat among others.

I’ve found that most people don’t know that our washing machines have multiple wash cycles. The first one loosens up the dirt. The second really gets the fabrics clean. This is the same with your hair. I recommend two shampoos if you're going more than one day in-between shampoos. The first shampoo loosens the dirt, the second really gets it clean. If the second shampoo doesn’t garner a good lather, you may even need a third shampoo.
Another important step is that the scalp is the part of the hair that needs the gentle scrubbing. You can gently work the shampoo through the ends, but focus your scrub mostly on the scalp. Focus especially around the perimeter of the hairline, all the way around the back to the nape of your neck.
Finally, most drug-store shampoos have water contents of about 50%. This means you need much more shampoo to be effective. Salon-quality shampoos have water contents of less than 10%. They often cost more because they are using much higher quality ingredients, with a lower water content. They are much more concentrated, therefore you need less shampoo each time. They are also not stripping your hair of much needed nutrients, and you will need less conditioner as well. Purchasing your salon-quality shampoo from your stylist helps support their small business as well!
Here’s a few of my favorite shampoos for different hair types:
